White Shade House
A simple new house on a flat site on Sydney’s Lower North Shore. As lovers of modernism, the clients wanted a crisp, elegant, energy-efficient home robust enough to withstand the rigours of day to day family life. The long axis of the house faces due north with overhangs calculated to admit winter sun and shade in summer. Windows and doors are double-glazed. The house combines concrete frame structure with reverse masonry veneer infill panels to enhance thermal and acoustic performance. The concrete is left exposed; either off-form or polished. The cabinetry, fenestration and stair are expressed as insertions in the concrete frame. Rain water storage is located under the floor slab with in-slab hydronic heating.
