A new, contemporary 158 bed Residential Care Facility located in East Maitland. This purpose-designed building will incorporate new models of care in non-institutional ‘care household’ environments. The care households sit alongside a selection of other services including Wellness & Health, Café, Community functions, Respite Care & Day Centre and a diverse range of outdoor activities and points of interest. The building is intended to be proudly connected with the local community for both the High Care and Retirement Living residents of Fresh Hope and their families and friends. The design concept is to provide a building that is strongly connected with the landscape, especially the existing mature trees on site and in the adjacent riparian corridor and bushland park.

Calderflower have designed an exemplary care home for Opal Healthcare. The success of the development is evident in the positive client and resident feedback.

Opened in September 2022, Glenmore Park Care Community is designed to enhance residents’ quality of life while respecting the surrounding environmental context and streetscape.

Sustainable design, thoughtful landscaping, resident wellbeing, innovation in care and community engagement are at the core of Opal Healthcare’s design philosophy, inspired by their purpose – “to bring joy to those we care for”.

Opal Glenmore Park won the 2023 Award for Excellence in Aged Care at the UDIA NSW & Coronation Property Awards with the judge’s comments;

“Glenmore Park Care Community creates an engaging living environment which is most unlike an institution, serving a local community which is ageing and in need of quality, local care opportunities. The building offers a wide range of services to complement its 143 bedroom suites. The judges felt the interior design was one of the best they had ever seen. The exterior of the centre has been thoughtfully designed to break down its apparent mass, to respect its neighbours and the surrounding environment, and to provide a range of themed, outdoor, breakout spaces for residents and their families. The judges were impressed by the design which has delivered an efficient centre, with a very homely feel. The project relates well to its neighbours, including the adjacent Penrith City Council community centre and connects with the adjacent parkland around Glenmore Loch.”

Winner: UDIA NSW 2021 Awards for Excellence: Retirement Living

The Royce is a luxurious development of 145 independent living units and a 126 bed care facility, which forms part of the Penrith Panthers Masterplan. The design philosophy behind the development is to allow for ‘Ageing with Choice’.

‘Ageing with Choice’ brings services to the individual within their home, meaning that they can choose to stay in their own home longer, and fostering an environment where people continue to live in a community, retaining their friends and interests. The development has been designed to provide flexibility in the layout of individual apartments, enabling the internal design to change to respond to the needs of the individual, such as altering the layout of the kitchen and bathroom to accommodate a wheelchair.

Winner: UDIA NSW 2021 Awards for Excellence: Aged Care

Whole-heartedly adopting the Butterfly Household Model (developed by Dr. David Sheard, UK) for person-centred dementia care, the building facilitates a focus on interpersonal relationships and enables an emotional connection between carers and residents, through shared experience and communication.
Sited in the Southern Highlands south of Sydney, the home-like experience supports independence and comfort to people living with dementia. Through sympathetic siting, and a recognisable building form (pitched roof, deep eaves and verandah) and landscaping two connected fifteen-bed households have been created on a scale that reflects a domestic aesthetic and function.
This residential scale of built form, finishes selection and interior design support the therapeutic benefits of residents enabling them to carry out normal daily activities; such as cooking, doing laundry, social meals and recreation, whilst living within a supportive and safe environment staffed by emotionally connected carers.

Winner: UDIA NSW 2020 Awards for Excellence: Aged Care

With a site neighbouring a national park and containing a building of heritage significance Southern Cross Care North Turramurra is designed to maximise the connection of its residents with the bush setting and existing heritage house and chapel on site.

The project is orientated and configured in order to ensure residents are continually provided with a vital connection to the outside world. The glazed common facilities and light wells located in the corridors, to bring daylight into corridors, ensure that the natural circadian rhythms of both residents and staff are continually maintained promoting healthy bodies and minds.

Adding to this the locations of the shared lounges and dining spaces have been positioned to capture the picturesque Australian bush surroundings, invigorating and promoting conversation amongst residents.

Restoration of a heritage house and chapel as part of the building works also encourage residents to move around the site, creating points of interest outside of the care building as well as within.

A residential care facility in Baulkham Hills for Catholic Healthcare designed to accommodate 104 residents, including those who suffer from Dementia. The building has been configured to respond to complex sloping terrain, significant tree protection, heritage view corridors  and the residential context of the site and local neighbourhood. The greater masterplan that the property sits within, has also been instructive in guiding the building form and scale. This project was successfully delivered in a short timeframe, completed in 2021.

The newly completed Barry Marsh House Residential Care home represents the current care and service model for Anglicare. Abundant natural daylight with internal lightwells are the key feature in the care wings, allowing residents and staff to experience the movement of the sun throughout the day. Conventional corridor spaces are re-defined as places of interest and engagement, with contemporary finishes and original artworks adding elements of interest and delight.
